Soar

Artist: Annemarie Bell
Artist's Description
This song is about overcoming the psychological damage to mind and spirit resulting from being bullied. The third and fourth verses were inspired by the powerful and poignant commencement address of Jennifer Lee, film director and writer, who spoke at her alma mater, the University of New Hampshire, in May 2014. Soar

By Annemarie Bell
Soar

She scurries home from school
Glancing over her shoulder
She stumbles on her own shoes
And drops her English Lit folder

She slides her key in the front door
And bolts down the hall
Her tears return for an encore
Black mascara waterfalls

Their cruel words pelted her
Like a cold November rain
Will I ever be good enough?
Will I ever find my way?

You’re an unspoken promise
Dancing through an open door
You’re the updraft in the canyon
So spread your wings and soar

Then she’s twenty-one
And meets a traveling angel
Revealing glimpses of heaven
He breaks through her hard shell

Living free in the moment
With a joy unparalleled
Riding life on colored waves
Never doubting himself

His soft words caressed her
Like the evening spring rain
You’re already good enough
You’re well on your way

You’re an unspoken promise
Dancing through an open door
You’re the updraft in the canyon
So spread your wings and soar
