Omega

Artist: J.R. Mallard
Artist's Description
The classic 'You were better qualified for the promotion but your boss nominated the more social collegue he happens to sometimes go out for coffee with' situation.

Of course, this is something many creators face also, with the music and publishing industries being first and foremost about who knows who and what sells now than about sheer talent or originality... and that can be very frustrating.

Nevertheless, some of us aren't willing to 'prostitute' ourselves professionally or socially to increase our chances of making it, and that's what I described through the metaphor of the Omega, both in wolf hierarchy and as the human psychological type, which I associate with.

I was thinking of how J.K. Rowling's manuscript of Harry Potter was initially rejected by many publishers, one of which came back to offer her a contract after the book had proven to be a success. Her response was something like 'You didn't give me my chance when I needed you to believe in me, and now you want to latch on what you know is easy money. No thanks. Bloomsbury bet on me, now they profit, not you.', and that's what inspired the bridge.

Male voice. 'Self-made-ness'.

Omega

By J.R. Mallard
Omega

I must have had a moment of weakness
To think for even a split second
That a lone, odd, black wolf
Could hope for a little support and friendship
From a knitted flock of sheep

I must have been so wildly starved and stressed
To trust you’d show consideration
To a wary lone wolf
But you made it clear I am an intruder
Truly sorry to disturb

But when you denied me your helping hand
The blow re-ignited my dying flame

So thank you for reminding me who I am
Thanks for reminding me where I came from
I’m capable and independent
An Omega is who I am

I’ll strike out on my own
Through the swamps and the tall grass
Blaze a trail of my own
Through the storms and the snow blasts
Covering up my tracks
And you’ll hear me in the night
Howling with pride
The cry of the Omega

Our metal is tested through agony
Mine is shaped like the head of a dude
An individual
Is what I still boast while you all seek to blend
With your friends and with the trends

What pride is there in assisted glory?
I’d rather strive alone than owe you
Your stamp of approval
Would only smear my self-made identity
Truly, your contempt saved me

Cause when the burning hurt choked up my throat
I swallowed it and I claimed back control

So thank you for reminding me who I am
Thanks for reminding me what I stand for
Autonomy and self-reliance
Yeah, Omega is what I am

I strike out on my own
Through the swamps and the tall grass
Blaze a trail of my own
Through the storms and the snow blasts
Covering up my tracks
And you’ll hear me in the night
Howling with pride
The cry of the Omega

And I cannot fail cause I’ll
Either make it or I’ll drop
Because even if I tire
I won’t rest and I won’t stop
Until the mountain top
And you’ll hear me from the heights
Howling my pride
The pride of the Omega

And when you come to me with begging hands
Expecting to leech off my hard-earned fame

My prize will be to remind you where you stand
For snubbing me before I built my throne
And you’re not welcome on my domaine
Cause Omegas don’t share their claims
And an Omega is who I am

I strike out on my own
Through the swamps and the tall grass
Blaze a trail of my own
Through the storms and the snow blasts
Covering up my tracks
And you’ll hear me in the night
Howling with pride
The cry of the Omega

And I cannot fail cause I’ll
Either make it or I’ll drop
Because even if I tire
I won’t rest and I won’t stop
Until the mountain top
And you’ll hear me from the heights
Howling my pride
The pride of the Omega

Who stroke out on his own
Blazed a trail of his own
And made it… on his own
