An Afternoon

By Franks Songs
A slumbering hulk of grey white rock
That fell from the edge of a shoreline field
Half bathed by the lapping midday tide
Otherwise washed by wind and rain

In the shade of a slanting jagged ledge
Live barnacle crabs and green seaweed
With ragged leaves and tangled tales
That bob and weave on bubbling waves

The small brave hearts of winter birds
That stay when the days are cold and grey
In the sky at dusk they chirp and flutter
As the flock and gather on the boundary wire

Flintstone rocks wild blossom and fern
Where a hillside ridge overlooks the sea
Smoke from a thatched roof chimney top
Climbing slow in the calm of a Summer's day

Shape an arrow head from melted lead
Bend a hazel stick into a bow
Aligned and tied with bailing twine
An arrow launched at the turf shed door

A toy boat made from an old tin can
With a balancing cargo of pebbles and sand
Set adrift to the whim of the waves and wind
Going out at the speed of an ebbing tide

Bare feet by the edge of small rock pools
Searching for sea moss winkles and shrimp
An evening falls they hear the call
Come on home now it's going to rain
